This volume
contains papers selected for presentation at the International Conference on
Hydraulics of Dams and River Structures in Tehran, Iran on 26–28th April 2004.
Hydraulic structures and river works are essential for the development of
countries. This is more significant in the millennium development goals owing
to scarcity of water for the ever-increasing population of the world. The
objective of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners
to exchange views and experiences on hydraulics of structures associated with
rivers and dams. It is further hoped and anticipated that this would lead to a
state of the art of the current practice to improve design of hydraulic
structures especially in developing countries. Not overlooking the ever growing
need for more enhanced and profound non-structural approaches in water
resources management issues, it is deliberated that through such a conference
the wealth of knowledge and experience in the field would be shared and the
structural aspect of water resources management is given its deserved share in
sustainable development of infra-structure. In this respect it is hoped that
series of specialised conferences of this nature will continue to be held in
future. This conference has been jointly organised by the Iranian Hydraulic
Association, International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research
and the Iranian National Water Research Institute. The papers are grouped into
ten chapters covering the full spectrum of interest in the field.
