Engineering is the second volume in the series on geotechnical engineering
closely following A Textbook of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering
written to meet the requirements of undergraduate students. This volume covers
various aspects of foundation engineering bringing together all the relevant
advanced theories coherently. As foundations have to be designed to simulate
field conditions it is imperative that the consulting engineer must be
conversant with all the theories that are available as also the available
approaches. This volume strives to meet most of these requirements It also
presents in detail authors own research work on laterally loaded pile
foundations to solve many of the problems confronted in this field. The
approach is direct and simple as compared to the complicated methods proposed

THE AUTHOR
V. N. S. Murthy is currently
consulting geotechnical engineer practising in Bangalore India. He was Head
Department of Civil Engineering Bhooma Reddy College of Engineering and
Technology Hubli and was on the staff of Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute
Mumbai. He was Assistant Plio essor Department of Civil Engineering Indian
Institute of Technology Kharagpur; Assistant Director and Head Soil Engineering
Division Central Building Research Institute Roorkee; and Senior Professor and
Head Civil Engineering Department Regional College of Engineering Nagpur. He
was the Principal Geotechnical Consultant of Sai Kripa Technical Consultants
New Delhi. He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Mysore
University Master of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of
Illinois Urbana-Champaign and PhD in foundation engineering from the Indian
Institute of Technology Kharagpur India. Prof. Murthy was a consultant to many
prestigious organizations such as National Thermal Power Corporation National
Industrial Development Corporation Mathura Oil Refinery Maruti Udyog Ltd. He
has authored numerous technical papers published in India and abroad. He is a
Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) a life member of the
Geotechnical Society (India) and a member of the International Society of Soil
Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (India).
